Both natural and SFX makeup would be required for our film. First of all we decided what make-up look would be most effective on each character.
Hostage: Natural make-up at the start of the film, connoting ordinary life and the equilibrium of the film. After the abduction, the female would be seen with SFX make-up of bruising and possibly facial injuries, highlighting the kidnapper has abused her and enforcing our genre further as violence is a common conventional theme of the thriller genre. These two looks were inspired by female characters used in previous action / thriller films. The first is 'Katnis' from The Hunger Games. The SFX makeup is inspired by 'Maria' from The Impossible. |
Kidnappers: Similarly to the hostage we would want the kidnappers to appear as natural at the start of the trailer however as there is more of a struggle and things begin to reach the disruption of the narrative they will appear to become more dirty to show they're struggle. We will have SFX of dirt and mud on the kidnapper's face. This may make the villain look physically more intimidating to the audience as his facial features are darker and more intimidating. It may also show the audience his lack of home luxuries such as cleanliness, suggesting he is possibly living rough and so revealing part of the narrative to the audience. However, if the audience have not understood this, they may wonder how he has got so dirty, creating narrative enigma and encouraging the audience to continue watching in order to find out the true reason.
