In the first shot the production and distribution logos are shown, the SONY logo will trigger memories of other films made by the same company, if viewers have enjoyed a film made by SONY previously they may decide to watch the film. It also creates an idea of the type of film the trailer is trying to sell. For example, SONY and Columbia are well known for making films that identify in the thriller and action genre. We then see an aerial establishing shot of a large beach, this shows the location and setting is a desolate location surrounded by water which instantly foreshadows the fear of the deep sea and the unknown, this thus immediately begins to convey danger. During this shot we see only one figure enter the water, and the beach is empty, this further adds to the idea of the girl being alone. We then see a medium shot that pans up from under the water to the surface of the water that reveals a young female surfing in the water. She is wearing a wet suit top, this makes her appear experienced, she is presented as feminine as she is wearing jewellery and her hair is down. The water is a dark emerald colour, this presents the darkness of the sea, the water is not completely clear and all is not visible. We then see a long shot that shows a vast number of birds flying up and away from the water, this presents danger, animals are leaving the area which suggests that the female should be too. A further medium shot shows a wave much larger than the girl coming towards her and the camera, almost as though it is going to come over her however the water covers the camera shot and we then see a long low angled shot showing the athletic female going deep into the water under the large powerful wave. A medium shot then shows the camera emerge from the water as the girl does followed by a fade to black. This fade creates tension and adds to the fear of the unknown. Another aerial wide shot shows the female in the sea as well as two other surfers, we realise that she is not alone and this for a moment may relax the viewer. The sound over the start of the trailer is deep noises from the ocean, this adds to the tension in the trailer as the dark tone of the sound leaves the view worried. The editing transitions mostly used in The Shallows trailer are fades, cuts and blackouts. The fades appeal to the audience because they allow a smooth transition into the next scene as well as a pause which builds tension the darkness also adds to the thrill of the film. However, the use of cuts gives the effect of action as the change is immediate and sudden, this does not allow the audience any time to prepare for what they're going to see next. The scenes are forced upon them in a way that increases tension and the drama of the trailer. It also gives them no opportunity to pause and look too long at what they're seeing which leaves them with narrative hooks resulting in them wanting to watch the film; which is the aim of the trailer. The shots in the trailer only remain on screen for a short amount of time to heighten the curiosity of the audience, this fast-paced editing begins to increase as we enter the second section of the trailer.
The sound of the trailer at this point changes after a cut to a close-up shot of the female biting an apple, which has connotations of hunger and biting as well as eating. We then hear some dialogue of her on facetime to her family, this gives us the impression that despite her being alone she has family that care about her and as a result the audience see the character’s personality and who would be affected if something was to happen to her. The shot then cuts to one of the female in the water a sharp sound and a thud is heard as the female is hit. I close-up of her underwater then shows her screaming with no sound, the water is turning red due to blood loss this creates tension as we want to know if the girl has survived. A high-pitched screeching sound is heard continuously as a montage of shots show her struggling in the red coloured water. A medium shot of her on a rock is then shown as the camera pans around her we can see how far away from the shore she is, this connotes danger as we know the shark is in the water and therefore she is stuck. A loud thudding sound, the beat of a drum that continues to build during the trailer especially at the end when the shots are shown quicker to increase the dramatic tension. It is only whenever the camera is submerged into the water that we hear the screams and cries of a female. She shouts "HELP! HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP! PLEASE HELP ME! HELP! HELP ME!" The constant screaming that is coming from the female, creates tension within the audience as they are becoming quickly worried and are forced to wait in anticipation in order to find out what is happening. At the time of the screaming, the female's face is not on screen, only the moving sea. This teases the audience as it creates narrative enigma in a way that makes them want to watch the film to find out exactly what is going on. There is no dialogue from other characters in the trailer apart from the screams before the other men in the sea ae killed. As the trailer reaches a climax, so does the music as the loud thudding increases, further increasing the dramatic tension within the trailer. The suspense builds and then suddenly reaches a point as the loud thudding slows down. We then see a black screen with the words “This Summer” on, this is a typical convention of a trailer as the date of release is not exact leaving more anticipation within the audience. The time of year is also noticeable as summer is a time when many of the target audience will be going on holiday and swimming in the sea, this further adds to the effect of the film. Furthermore, black cuts were used in the trailer to almost cut things off from the audience this again adds narrative enigma. Hiding things so they are not exposed to a scene for too long. In a medium shot the camera was underwater and the shark shadow moved across the screen before the screen blacked out. This black out immediately forced the audience to drawn to the shark in the sea and have questions about what happened next creating narrative hooks. It also conveys a deep message of how evil is represented through the dark shadow and how the good will try to overcome the bad which is the plot of the film.
